Turnout up for Abruzzo regional election

By Region Central Italy News

The turnout for the Abruzzo regional election stood at 15.8% at midday on Sunday. This is up from 13.3% in the last regional polls in 2019.

The figure is calculated based on the turnout at 1,415 polling stations out of a total of 1,634.

In total 1,208,276 people living in the central Apennine region are called to vote for their new regional government. This poll is seen as another important test for the right-centre majority coalition led by Premier Giorgia Meloni. Last month, the ruling coalition suffered a narrow defeat in regional elections in Sardinia.

Ahead of the European parliament elections in June, the result of the Abruzzo regional election can be seen as a barometer.

Polling started at 7 am and ends at 11 pm local time.

The race is between the incumbent centre-right governor Marco Marsilio and Luciano d’Amico.

The latter is a university professor in business economics who is running with a broad centre-left coalition that includes the 5-Star Movement (M5S) and Democratic Party (PD). This is along the same alliance lines that took the M5S’s Alessandra Todde to victory in Sardinia in February.
