Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and her right-wing allies have successfully maintained control over the central region of Abruzzo, according to election results revealed today.
With nearly all ballots tallied from Sunday’s regional election, the incumbent right-wing governor, Marco Marsilio, secured over 53% of the vote. In contrast, the candidate supported by the major opposition parties garnered approximately 46.5%.
This victory marks a significant rebound for Meloni and her coalition after suffering a surprising defeat in Sardinia just two weeks prior.
The outcome of the election is poised to bolster Meloni’s position as she prepares for the upcoming European elections scheduled for June. It solidifies the dominance of her Brothers of Italy party within the Italian political landscape.
The election results dealt a blow to the centre-left bloc, which had set aside internal rivalries to campaign collectively. They were hoping to replicate their recent success in Sardinia, where Meloni’s candidate lost the vote.
The turnout for the Abruzzo regional election was higher in 2024 than in 2019.
Brothers of Italy (FdI) have strong showing
Meloni’s party achieved a significant victory in Abruzzo, securing approximately 24% of the vote in the mountainous region. The centre-left Democratic Party (PD) trailed behind, capturing 20.4% of the vote.
The election night outcomes varied for the prime minister’s allies. The centre-right Forza Italia party performed better than anticipated, securing over 13% of the vote. However, the League, led by Matteo Salvini, experienced a decline, garnering only 7.6%.
