Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli confirmed on Monday that the government has signed the decree enabling the State to complete the acquisition of Villa Verdi in Sant’Agata, near Piacenza.
Villa Verdi was the final residence of the iconic Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi, built during the later years of his life.
“Villa Verdi is a symbol of Italy’s cultural greatness and the place where the maestro found inspiration for many of his immortal compositions,” said Giuli. “Thanks to this important act, the State guarantees its preservation and returns it to the community as the heritage of everyone.”
The house is located a short distance from Verdi’s long-time home in Busseto and his birthplace in the small village of Le Roncole. Originally constructed as a private residence, it remained Verdi’s retreat throughout his later years. The villa became a museum in the 20th century through the efforts of Verdi’s family but has recently fallen into disrepair.
In 2023, opera houses across Italy said they would help the government secure the building.
The acquisition marks a critical step toward restoring the villa, allowing the public to explore this landmark of musical history. Designed as both a living space and a source of inspiration, Villa Verdi was where the composer worked on some of his most celebrated operas, cementing its role as a key symbol of Verdi’s legacy.
The restoration project will ensure the property is preserved for future generations and accessible to visitors as an important cultural site.
