On December 31, Italy allocated over €13 million to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund, overseen by the Energy Community Secretariat and co-chaired by the European Commission.
The funding aims to bolster Ukraine’s electricity supplies, particularly in the capital, Kyiv, where attacks on energy networks by Russian forces have intensified.
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani highlighted the importance of the donation in repairing critical infrastructure. In a statement, the Ministry declared: “At a time when attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure are intensifying, the decision represents a significant step in efforts to restore energy systems damaged by the conflict.”
The Energy Community Secretariat welcomed the contribution, stating: “Italy’s donation is a testament to global solidarity and highlights the fund’s undisputed importance in providing timely and effective assistance to the Ukrainian energy sector.”
This €13 million boost will be crucial in addressing widespread power outages affecting millions across Ukraine as the war continues to devastate the country. Italy’s pledge follows earlier contributions from other European nations, including Poland, which donated over €3.15 million in December to support energy repairs.
The Ukraine Energy Support Fund, supported by 30 international donors, demonstrates Europe’s collective efforts to mitigate the effects of war on Ukraine’s population. As European nations rally together, their unity offers hope and a lifeline to those suffering from the conflict.
In the Italian President’s New Year speech, he condemned Russia’s aggression towards Ukraine. He said, “Peace is not submission to the aggressor.”
