Sardinia Governor Alessandra Todde Appeals Disqualification Ruling

By Region News The Islands

Sardinia Governor Alessandra Todde has vowed to continue her role despite a court ruling to disqualify her. The Regional Election Commission of the Court of Appeal ruled she breached election expense rules during her February campaign.

Todde, a 5-Star Movement member supported by centre-left parties, plans to appeal the decision. If disqualified, she will lose her seat in the Sardinian Regional Assembly and her governorship. “I will calmly continue to do my job in the interest of the Sardinian people,” Todde stated.

She emphasised her trust in the judiciary and denied any irregularities. “I have full motivation and legitimacy to continue working for Sardinians,” she added. Todde highlighted that the Regional Assembly must ratify the court’s ruling, and until then, she remains focused on her duties.

The appeal process involves both judicial and political proceedings, which could take time. Todde described the appeal as routine, stating her lawyers strongly disagree with the court’s observations. “We are not aware of any irregularities,” she noted, asserting confidence in her campaign’s legitimacy.

Addressing concerns about a potential clash between politics and the judiciary, Todde dismissed the idea as “science fiction.” She stressed the importance of separating political, administrative, and judicial matters, reaffirming her faith in the judicial system.

Todde was the first woman elected to Governor of Sardinia.

Alessandra Todde continues to work with “absolute motivation”

The final decision lies with the Sardinian Regional Assembly, which will determine whether to uphold the court’s ruling. In the meantime, Todde insists she will continue working with “absolute motivation” for the people of Sardinia.

“I want to remind everyone that we were elected to serve the Sardinians and this clearly does not end until there are definitive acts. So, we continue to work with absolute motivation because this is why we were elected and this is why we receive public money.  It would be a shame if we did not continue to work in a motivated manner as we must do.

“The issue of legitimacy does not arise, I repeat, to the extent that there are no definitive acts. The Regional Council will follow its path and in the meantime we continue to work with absolute motivation and above all with absolute legitimacy”.
