Bank robbers escape through tunnel in Naples

By Region News Southern Italy

A high-stakes bank robbery in the heart of Naples ended without physical injury yesterday afternoon. The armed bank robbers held 25 people hostage before making a calculated escape through the city’s underground network.

The incident, which unfolded at a branch of Crédit Agricole, drew a massive response from law enforcement and captivated a digital audience of tens of thousands who watched the standoff unfold via social media livestreams.

The robbery began around midday in the southern Italian city, prompting police to quickly cordon off the area and establish a perimeter around the bank. For approximately two hours, authorities engaged in negotiations with the suspects while a large crowd of residents and bystanders gathered in the nearby square. As the situation progressed, members of the Carabinieri’s special forces were flown in from Tuscany to assist local units in managing the crisis.

Firefighters smash windows to allow hostages to escape

The tension culminated when firefighters used battering rams to break through a window, allowing the hostages to be evacuated. While some of those released appeared composed as they stepped over the shattered glass, others were visibly distressed and sought comfort from relatives waiting outside. Medical assistance was provided to six individuals who were suffering from shock, though regional official Michele di Bari confirmed that the swift response ensured everyone was freed without serious injuries.

One witness, speaking to the news site Fanpage.it, described how the robbers had confined the group to a room during the heist. He noted that although the men were armed, they did not resort to violence against the captives.

Shortly after special forces entered the building, using stun grenades to secure the interior, it became clear the bank robbers had already vanished. Investigations revealed they had accessed a tunnel, likely part of the city’s complex sewer system, to bypass the police lines. Footage from the scene later showed Carabinieri and firefighters inspecting a nearby manhole as they attempted to trace the escape route.

The total value of the stolen property remains unconfirmed. According to local reports, the robbers targeted personal safety deposit boxes rather than the bank’s cash reserves, making it difficult for officials to immediately quantify the loss. Authorities continue to search the subterranean passages beneath the city, though no arrests have yet been made.
