September Strikes in Italy: What Travellers Need to Know

News Travel & Tourism

Travellers and commuters in Italy face serious disruption this September as strikes hit both airports and rail services nationwide.

After a summer pause in industrial action, unions have confirmed multiple September strikes. These will particularly affect Milan, Rome, and regional hubs in Calabria, Tuscany, and Umbria.

Major Airport Disruptions

Milan’s Linate and Malpensa airports will see a 24-hour strike by handling staff on 14–15 September. Passengers should expect flight delays, cancellations, and long queues.

On 26 September, a nationwide strike will involve baggage handlers, ground staff, and some airline crews. The action is likely to cause widespread disruption across Italy’s airports.

Rail Services Impacted

Train travellers also face challenges. A strike on 15 September will hit southern routes, especially in Calabria, with Trenitalia warning of cancellations.

Regional services in La Spezia, Pisa, and Umbria will also be affected. On 26 September, rail staff will join aviation workers in coordinated walkouts, impacting both regional and Intercity services.

The disputes centre on pay, staffing shortages, and working conditions. Multiple unions are involved, representing airline crews, baggage handlers, and rail staff.

Travellers should check timetables frequently and confirm bookings with their airline or rail operator. The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport publishes an official strike calendar.
