Italy is set to experience widespread travel disruptions in November 2024, with multiple strikes impacting air travel, trains, and local public transport.
Unions have organised transport strikes in November which will affect the whole of Italy’s transport system.
8 November: Local Public Transport Strikes
A nationwide 24-hour strike on Friday, 8 November, is expected to cause major disruption to local public transport in cities across Italy. Services on buses, subways, and trams may be severely affected, with unions warning that the typical minimum rush-hour services may not be provided.
12 November: Airport Strikes
On Tuesday, 12 November, air traffic controllers with ENAV will hold a four-hour strike from 13:00 to 17:00, potentially disrupting flights at Naples, Pescara, Perugia, and Lampedusa airports. Additionally, baggage handlers at Rome Fiumicino, Bologna, and Catania airports plan to strike during the same hours, likely impacting check-in and baggage handling services.
18 and 19 November: Local Transport Strikes in Naples and Palermo
Naples will see a four-hour strike affecting local public transport on Monday, 18 November, from 11:00 to 15:00. Palermo will face a similar disruption on Tuesday, 19 November, from 10:00 to 14:00.
28-29 November: National Rail Strike
Rail passengers should prepare for a 24-hour national rail strike from 21:00 Thursday, 28 November, until 21:00 Friday, 29 November. This action will affect both regional and long-distance services operated by Trenitalia and Italo.
29 November: Airport Strikes in Milan and Venice
Baggage handlers at Milan’s Linate and Malpensa airports will observe a 24-hour strike on 29 November. At Venice Airport, baggage handlers will strike from 14:00 to 18:00, potentially causing delays in luggage handling and check-in processes.
29 November: WizzAir Strike
WizzAir Malta’s pilots and cabin crew in Italy plan a 24-hour strike on 29 November. If it goes ahead, it may impact the airline’s schedule.
29 November: General Strike
A national eight-hour general strike has been called by trade unions CGIL and UIL for 29 November. It is in protest of the government’s “inadequate” budget. The strike could disrupt schools, public offices, factories, and public transport services.
