An eight-hour impromptu strike by railway workers from Trenitalia, Trenitalia Tper, Fs Security, Italo Ntv, and Trenord disrupted train services across Italy on Tuesday.

The protest, which ran from 9:00 to 17:00, was sparked by the stabbing of a train conductor in Liguria. This incident prompted various labour unions including Filt Cgil, Fit Cisl, Uiltrasporti to organize the strike. They demand better security measures for staff. It is apparently part of a growing trend of attacks on railway personnel,

The 44-year-old conductor was attacked by a 21-year-old Egyptian national when he requested tickets on a regional train travelling from Genoa to Busalla. The conductor was taken to Genoa’s Villa Scassi Hospital, where he remains in serious but stable condition.

Rail services in major cities including Rome, Florence, and Naples saw delays of up to three hours. Only 30% of trains operated as scheduled.

One customer in Florence said there was little communication as to why the strike was being held. Her train to Venice was cancelled, though she was able to depart two hours later.

Unions are already holding a number of transport strikes across the month of November. On 8th November, all public transport systems will be affected by a strike. You can read details on the planned strikes here.
