National general strike on 8 March

News

A national general strike in Italy on Saturday 8 March will disrupt education, healthcare and transport, including rail and air travel.

Trade unions called the 24-hour national general strike, coinciding with International Women’s Day, to protest violence and discrimination against women and support women’s rights.

The feminist movement Non Una di Meno has organised a “transfeminist” strike and boycott against gender-based roles and an increasingly authoritarian society. Rallies will take place in Rome and Milan.

The SLAI-COBAS, CUB and USI-CIT trade unions back the strike, which will affect air transport all day, causing possible delays and cancellations.

Italy’s civil aviation authority ENAC reminds travellers that flights are guaranteed during strikes from 07.00-10.00 and 18.00-21.00. Some Trenitalia, Italo and Trenord train services will be disrupted from 21.00 on Friday 7 March until 21.00 on Saturday.

Guaranteed rail services will run on Saturday during peak commuter hours, from 06.00 to 09.00 and 18.00 to 21.00.

Public office openings, as well as catering and cleaning services in schools, hospitals and healthcare facilities, may also be affected. Emergency healthcare will be guaranteed.

Motorway services face disruption from 22.00 on Friday until 22.00 on Saturday. Local public transport in cities should not be affected.

The strike will affect the ability of people to visit the country’s public museums which will open for free on International Women’s Day.

Transport strike details can be found on the Ministry’s website.
