The Vatican will install a live webcam at St. Peter’s Tomb as part of its technological initiatives for the Jubilee Year 2025. Pope Francis will inaugurate the livestream on 2 December, allowing Catholics worldwide to view the tomb of the apostle and first pope.
The Vatican is also installing a second live webcam which will be placed at the Holy Door of St. Peter’s Basilica. Pope Francis will open on Christmas Eve to officially launch Jubilee 2025. According to tradition, pilgrims who pass through the Holy Door can obtain a plenary indulgence. For those unable to travel to Rome, the Vatican stated the Holy Door livestream will offer “symbolic” access.
The Holy See has recently embraced innovative technology, launching a 3D virtual replica of St. Peter’s Basilica. Created using AI and 400,000 high-resolution images, this “digital twin” allows users to explore the landmark virtually from anywhere in the world.
Last month, the Vatican introduced its Jubilee mascot, an anime-style character named Luce, meaning “light” in Italian.
Rome Races to Complete Jubilee Projects
Rome is under pressure to finish public works ahead of Jubilee Year, which is expected to draw 32 million pilgrims and tourists. Key projects include a new underpass near the Vatican, scheduled to open on 20 December, and the renovation of major tram lines.
The city is also addressing transportation challenges. Rome’s Metro A line will return to regular operating hours on 6 December, following eight months of early closures for maintenance. Services will run from 05.30 to 23.30 Sunday to Thursday, and until 01.30 on Fridays and Saturdays. However, the Anagnina station will close on 30 November and 1 December, with shuttle buses connecting Anagnina and Cinecittà during this period.
While progress is evident, delays have caused disruptions. Landmarks such as the Trevi Fountain are currently under scaffolding, leaving some visitors disappointed. Earlier this month, Mayor Roberto Gualtieri reaffirmed that the city remains on track to complete Jubilee-related projects on time.
