Subiaco beat other finalists, including Grottaferrata, Ischia, Macchiagodena, Mistretta, and Sorrento.

Gian Arturo Ferrari, president of the jury, explained the decision to focus on smaller towns, noting Italy is defined by its many small centres, which often lack the resources of larger cities. Subiaco impressed the jury with its plans to restore local libraries and use modern technologies to attract younger readers.

What to See and Do in Subiaco

While Subiaco may not top the list of Italy’s must-visit destinations, it is well worth a day trip, particularly for the monasteries and religious sites. These are some of the sites to see:

  • Sacro Speco (Holy Cave): Perched on the rocky hillside, this monastery is where Saint Benedict lived as a hermit. Its striking medieval frescoes and serene setting make it a fascinating stop.
  • Monastery of Saint Scholastica: One of the oldest Benedictine monasteries, this site features a blend of Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance architecture.
  • Aniene Valley: The area around Subiaco is ideal for nature lovers, with trails and scenic views.
  • Medieval Town Centre: Subiaco’s narrow streets and medieval charm are perfect for a leisurely wander. A perfect snapshot of small-town Italy.
  • Paper Mill Museum: Subiaco holds a special place in literary history as the site of Italy’s first printing press.

For those seeking a blend of history, culture, and a connection to Italy’s literary roots, Subiaco is a rewarding day trip from Rome.
