Italy concluded the 2024 European Athletics Championships in Rome with a historic performance, achieving their best-ever medal haul.
The Italian team secured a total of 24 medals: 11 gold, 9 silver, and 4 bronze, dominating the medals table.
A standout moment was the men’s 4x100m relay team, which clinched gold with a time of 37.82 seconds. The team comprised Matteo Melluzzo, Lorenzo Patta, Filippo Tortu, and Olympic champion Marcell Jacobs. The latter also retained his individual European 100m title earlier in the championships.
In addition to the relay success, Italy earned a silver medal in the men’s 4x400m relay and another silver in the women’s long jump by Larissa Iapichino. Pietro Arese added to the tally with a bronze in the men’s 1500m race.
High jumper Gianmarco Tamberi took gold in his discipline, also setting a Championship record of 2.37 metres. Other Italians setting European Athletics Championships records were Yemaneberhan Crippa (1:01:03) in the Half Marathon men’s final, and Leonard Fabbri (22.45m) in the men’s shotput.
Italy’s remarkable performance reflects their growing prominence in European athletics, marked by a combination of individual brilliance and strong team efforts across various disciplines.
The results send a positive signal for the upcoming Olympics in Paris.
