Arianna Fontana retains her 500m title at Beijing 2022. It takes her total Olympic tally to 10 medals.
Fontana is now Italy’s joint-record holder for Winter Games medals as well as short track’s most decorated Olympian.
The 35-year-old Italian now has 10 medals. She started the Beijing Winter Olympics on eight medals. She won silver in the first Olympic mixed relay, before retaining her 500-metre title. Arianna Fontana has now matched Stefania Belmondo’s record for the most medals won by an Italian at the Games.
Belmondo, a cross-country skier, won her ten medals in five Games; the last was at Salt Lake in 2002.
Record medal haul
Fontana’s ten medals also come from five Games. She made her Olympic debut at Torino 2006, winning bronze in the 3000m relay. This made her the youngest Italian to win a medal at a Winter Games at just 16.
She has two gold, three silver and five bronze. Fontana has one more chance to medal in the women’s 3,000 meter relay.
Italy now have five medals at Beijing 2022, and are currently in eighth place in the medal table. In the summer Olympics, Italy had a record medal haul. Can they do as well this winter?
