The 2024 Internazionali BNL d’Italia tennis tournament, also known as the Rome Masters or the Italian Open, is set to take place at the Foro Italico from 6th to 19th May.
Presented at the Colosseum on Tuesday, this year marks the 81st edition of the prestigious event. Featuring both men’s and women’s tournaments, the schedule includes more than 300 matches. Qualifying matches will run from 6th to 7th May, with play from the main draw commencing on 8th May.
Organisers are anticipating a record-breaking attendance of 350,000 tennis enthusiasts for the tournament played on a red clay surface spread across 14 courts. Eight courts will host singles and doubles matches, while the remaining six will be allocated for practice sessions.
The spotlight this year falls on prominent players such as World Number 2, Jannik Sinner, the highest-ranked Italian player in history. He will be competing alongside tennis icons like Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, 10-time Rome champion Rafael Nadal. Local sensation Matteo Berrettini, on the comeback from injury and multiple surgeries, will also be in the draw.
In the women’s competition, top contenders include world number one Iga Świątek, who claimed victory in Rome in 2021 and 2022, defending champion Elena Rybakina, Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff, Ons Jabeur, Danielle Collins, Naomi Osaka, and Jasmine Paolini.
The Italian Open, originally hosted in Milan from its inception in 1930, found its permanent home in Rome in 1934, becoming an open event in 1969.
