Polar cyclone hits Italy bringing the Apennines snow

News

A polar cyclone has brought storms and gales to Italy, bringing much welcomed snow over the central Apennines where the ski industry has been languishing.

Coastal swells will cause major damage to bathing establishments and other resort facilities in Ligurian, Tyrrhenian and western Sardinian regions, weatherman Lorenzo Tedici said.

The meteorologist at www.iLMeteo.it said there will also be “beating rain in the form of thunderstorms or cloudbursts that will pelt Tuscany, Lazio, Sardinia and above all Campania”.

The risk of flooding and landslides will be “very high”, Tedici said, with many regions already issuing orange hydrogeological alerts. There will also be widespread rain in the north, especially in Lombardy, eastern Liguria and the north-east, said Tedici.

Snow coming to the north

Snow will be abundant in the north, over hilly ground as well as the mountains. Locally, it may also settle over low ground, mixed with sleet and rain in Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna, said the weatherman.

Snow will also cloak the Apennines starting at 1,000 metres up as wintry conditions set in.
