More rain and snow for Italy this week

News

Italy is set for a week of rain and snow, starting Monday, meteorologist Antonio Sanò has forecast.

Sanò, founder of the weather website iLMeteo.it, said, “Persistent rain and snow, even at low altitudes, will affect many regions at the start of the week.”

Cold air entering the Mediterranean will trigger a cyclone, bringing heavy rain and thunderstorms to central and southern Italy and the islands of Sardinia and Sicily through Tuesday. Intense snowfall is expected in the Apennines above 1,200-1,400 metres.

Northern Italy will largely escape the worst of the weather, but Sanò noted, “Snowfall down to very low altitudes (300-500 metres) is possible in areas like the Dolomites, western Piedmont, and Emilia Romagna.” Heavy rainfall in late October caused disastrous flooding in Emilia-Romagna.

A brief reprieve is expected midweek, but another cyclonic system is predicted between Thursday, 12th, and Friday, 13th December. This system will cause a modest worsening of conditions across central and southern regions, with the most severe effects anticipated on Saturday, 14th December.
