Train strike to disrupt Italy rail services

News Travel & Tourism

Italy faces major rail disruption due to a 21-hour nationwide train strike starting 21.00 on Thursday 4th September. Services will be affected until 18.00 on Friday 5th September.

The strike involves staff from Trenitalia, private operator Italo, Trenitalia-Tper in Emilia-Romagna, and Trenord in Lombardy. Both regional and long-distance trains are expected to face cancellations.

Trenitalia warned that services “may be cancelled or changed.” The company confirmed that essential weekday regional services between 06.00 and 09.00 are guaranteed. A full list of guaranteed trains, including long-distance services, is available on the Trenitalia website.

Italo has also published details of its guaranteed services “to reduce inconvenience” for passengers.

Trenord said its regional, suburban, airport and long-distance routes could be affected. If services between Milan and Malpensa airport are cancelled, replacement buses will run.

Passengers using Rome’s Fiumicino airport should expect possible delays or cancellations on rail connections. Cargo trains are also included in the strike.

The industrial action has been called by trade unions SGB, USB Lavoro Privato and PDM/PDB over working conditions and contracts.

Separately, Rome will see a four-hour public transport strike on Thursday 4 September, from 08.30 to 12.30. This will affect buses, subways and trams.

For official updates on the train strike, see the transport ministry website.
