The Rome tram service will be temporarily suspended from 16th September until 3rd November. Buses will replace the trams as the final phase of works at the Porta Maggiore tram depot begins.
The project aims to modernise the depot to accommodate new 33-metre trams. All lines are expected to resume by 2nd December.
This transformation follows extensive upgrades to tram tracks and infrastructure across Rome, ahead of the Vatican’s Jubilee Year in 2025. The city’s transport company, ATAC, stated: “We are redeveloping the Porta Maggiore depot, more than 100 years after its construction, to accommodate the fleet of new trams and improve the service, thanks also to the completion of the renovation work on the entire network.” The company has apologised to commuters for the temporary inconvenience.
Until 3rd November, tram lines 2, 3, 5, and 14 will be replaced by buses. Line 19 will be suspended between Piazza di Porta Maggiore and Piazza dei Gerani, with buses running between Piazza di Porta Maggiore and Viale Giulio Cesare. From 4th November to 1st December, buses will cover the entire routes of lines 2, 5, and 8. Line 3 will have bus replacements between Trastevere station and Porta Maggiore. Line 19 will continue to be served by buses. However, tram line 14 will operate as usual.
Rome to get more taxis for Jubilee Year
Eugenio Patanè, the city’s transport councillor, described the works as “fundamental to allow public transport to return to its full efficiency.” These improvements come as Rome prepares for the influx of 32 million tourists and pilgrims expected for the Jubilee Year.
The tram works coincide with discussions over an anticipated rise in fares on Rome’s public transport network, set to take effect ahead of 2025.
