Each year, readers of Conde Nast Traveller vote in the Readers’ Choice Awards. In 2023, Italy has topped a number of the readers’ polls.
Best Island in Europe
The Italian island of Sardinia topped the readers’ poll for the best island in Europe, but it was not the only Italian offering that made the top 20.
Sardinia’s garland of golden sand makes it a beach-lovers’ paradise. It is home to top spas and flashy resorts on the coast. Inland, the the mountain villages, juniper forests and limestone gorges, are laced by hiking trails.
Sicily came in 5th place, while Ischia made 16th spot. Ischia is known for its 103 volcanic springs which treat a variety of ailments, from rheumatism to gout. Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean and its culture has been shaped by the multiple civilisations that have passed through over the millennia.
Friendliest city in Europe
Another table topper for Italy is Siena in Tuscany, voted the friendliest city in Europe. Full of medieval buildings and lively café-culture, the backstreets are alive with artisan boutiques and authentic family-run restaurants. It is also home to one of the best cathedrals in Italy.
The best destination spas in Europe
Again, the cream of Italy rose to the top, with Palazzo Fiuggi taking first place. Less than an hour from Rome and set in an 8-hectare park, the spa hotel won the 2021 Leading New Hotel award.
Alongside Palazzo Fiuggi was Marinedda Hotel Thalasso & Spa, Sardinia (9th), Lefay Resort & Spa Dolomiti, Pinzolo (11th), and Lefay Resort & Spa Lago di Garda (19th).
Best Cities in the World for Food
Italy may be renowned for its incredible ingredients made into tantalising dishes, but San Sebastian, Spain was always going to be hard to beat.
There was a good showing, nonetheless, with Naples taking third spot and Rome in ninth.
