Italian President Sergio Mattarella extended his congratulations to Donald Trump following his victory in the United States presidential election. He reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to strong bilateral relations with the U.S. and collaboration on the global stage.
“Our nations share enduring bonds of friendship and cooperation, anchored by democratic values and a mutual commitment to an international order grounded in rules,” Mattarella stated. He highlighted the importance of Euro-Atlantic ties, especially amid the current global landscape of conflicts and instability. “On behalf of the Italian Republic, I wish you well and prosperity for our American friends,” he concluded.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also congratulated Trump, writing on X: “On behalf of myself and the Italian government, heartfelt congratulations to the President-elect of the United States, Donald Trump.” Meloni stated the “sisterhood” between Italy and the U.S., describing the alliance as unbreakable, rooted in shared values and historical ties. “This strategic relationship is one I am confident we will further strengthen. Well done, President!”
However, opposition reactions were less optimistic. Democratic Party (PD) leader Elly Schlein expressed concern, stating, “Trump’s election is troubling for Europe and for Italy.” She noted Trump’s recent critical stance towards the European Union and warned of potential economic fallout. “Those celebrating him now for partisan reasons may rethink their stance when the effects of protectionist policies impact businesses and workers across Europe, including here in Italy,” Schlein remarked.
