Ruffini Resigns as Head of Italy’s Tax Agency

News

Ernesto Maria Ruffini, Director of Italy’s Inland Revenue Agency (Agenzia delle Entrate), announced his resignation, citing what he describes as the “demonisation” of the tax authority by politicians.

In an interview with Corriere della Sera on Friday, Ruffini expressed his frustration:
“I had never before seen public officials being branded as extortionists of State protection money or heard claims that the Inland Revenue is holding families hostage, as if it were a kidnapper. The role of director of the agency has even been reduced to a caricature, as if fighting tax evasion were shameful or partisan.”

Ruffini, who has remained largely silent until now, explained that his decision stemmed from a sense of duty to the State, but he warned that vilifying the tax authority undermines its fundamental role.
“If the tax authority itself is demonised, it strikes at the heart of the State. I have always believed that tax evaders harm honest citizens,” he said.

The Italian government has recently signalled its intention to foster a less confrontational relationship between the tax agency and the public.

Ruffini also dismissed rumours that his resignation signals a move into politics or an attempt to unify centrist opposition parties. While acknowledging his right to voice his opinions, he clarified that he had no political aspirations.
