Liguria Governor to remain under house arrest

News

A court in Genoa on Thursday denied Liguria Governor Giovanni Toti’s request to be released from house arrest.

Liguria Governor Toti has been under since 7th May in connection with a corruption investigation. The probe involves alleged bribes, where campaign funds were exchanged for favours, including the extension of a port terminal concession.

Toti, a centre-right politician, maintains his innocence and asserts he will prove his management of the northwestern Italian region was transparent.

Along with Toti, logistics businessman Aldo Spinelli, former chairman of the Genoa and Livorno soccer clubs, is also under house arrest, while former Genoa Port Authority President Paolo Signorini is in custody.

The court stated it rejected Toti’s request because he “did not fully understand the nature of the charges” and there was a risk of re-offence.

Toti was notified of his arrest in Sanremo, where he was attending a conference.
