Former Liguria Governor Giovanni Toti and port logistics entrepreneur Aldo Spinelli are now facing additional corruption charges.
Court documents filed before the first hearing of their trial, which is set for November 5, reveal Toti and Spinelli face charges of corruption according to judicial sources on Thursday.
Prosecutors Federico Manotti and Luca Monteverde allege the corruption occurred during a fundraising dinner on April 14, 2024, at Villa Lo Zerbino in Genoa. Organised in anticipation of the regional elections originally planned for 2025, the event reportedly cost €4,500 and was attended by 10 individuals associated with Spinelli.
The trial against Toti, Spinelli, and Emilio Signorini, the former chairman of the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority, is scheduled to begin on November 5 as part of an ongoing corruption investigation. The case centres on alleged bribes where campaign funds were exchanged for political favours, including the extension of a port terminal concession.
Toti, who resigned as governor last month, faces charges of corruption and illegal financing, while Spinelli and Signorini are charged with corruption.
