Italy beat England for first time in historic Six Nations victory

News Sport

Italy made rugby history with a thrilling victory over England in the Six Nations. They defeated the English for the first time in 33 attempts, 23-18, in what is regarded as the greatest result in the history of Italian rugby.

In front of a jubilant crowd in Stadio Olimpico, the Italy national rugby union team fought back from an 18–10 deficit to beat the England national rugby union team in a dramatic encounter.

The match-winning moment came in the 71st minute when replacement fly-half Leonardo Marin dived over the line to finish a breathtaking counterattack. The move was sparked by powerful runs from Monty Ioane and Tommaso Menoncello, who had earlier electrified the stadium with a brilliant solo try.

As the final whistle sounded, the roar from the Roman crowd echoed across the stadium. Italy sit above England in the table on 9 points, with two wins under their belt.

A victory years in the making

For Italy, the win was more than just a surprise result. It was the culmination of years of rebuilding after difficult periods in the Six Nations Championship.

Not long ago the Azzurri endured a painful run of 36 consecutive defeats in the tournament, a streak that lasted seven years before finally ending in 2022. Since then the team has gradually regained confidence and competitiveness.

Much of the transformation has been credited to head coach Gonzalo Quesada, who has reshaped the team since taking charge. Under his leadership, Italy has adopted a faster, more ambitious style of play and developed a new generation of talented players.

The victory over England is widely seen as confirmation that the Italian side is no longer simply the underdog of the tournament.

Turning point in the match

England appeared to be in control early in the match, scoring two well-worked tries through Tommy Freeman and Tom Roebuck.

But the momentum shifted dramatically in the second half. Within eight minutes, England were reduced to 13 players after two forwards, including captain Maro Itoje, were sent to the sin bin.

Sensing their opportunity, Italy increased the pressure and gradually took control of the game.

Menoncello’s brilliant try brought the home crowd to life, and the decisive moment arrived when Marin crossed the line late in the match to secure the historic victory.
