Who is Italy’s New Culture Minister?

Culture News

Alessandro Giuli, Italy’s newly appointed Minister for Culture, is a name that has sparked significant interest both within the country and internationally. With a career that bridges journalism, political commentary, and active involvement in cultural debates, Giuli represents a distinctive figure in Italian politics.

Alessandro Giuli was born in Rome in 1975 and began his professional career in journalism. He became widely known as a journalist and commentator, contributing to several prominent Italian newspapers and magazines, including “Il Foglio,” where he served as deputy editor. His writing often focused on political and cultural affairs, reflecting a sharp intellect and a critical perspective on contemporary issues.

Giuli is also known for his television appearances as a political analyst and commentator. He has regularly appeared on Italian TV programs, where his commentary has often been characterised by a strong defence of traditional values and a critical stance against progressive ideologies. In addition to his media work, Giuli has authored several books on politics and culture, where he has explored themes related to national identity, the role of tradition in modern society, and critiques of globalisation.

In 2022, Giuli took on the role of president of the Maxxi Foundation, the National Museum of XXI Century Arts in Rome. His appointment to this role was among the first by Sangiuliano who took office as culture minister the month before.

He is married to SkyTg24 journalist Valeria Falcioni with whom he has two children born in 2016 and 2019.

Political Leanings

Alessandro Giuli is generally regarded as a conservative with a strong inclination towards right-wing ideology. He has expressed admiration for figures on the nationalist and conservative spectrum and has often criticised left-wing policies and progressive cultural trends.

Giuli has aligned himself with Italy’s populist right, particularly in his critique of what he perceives as the “moralising” stance of liberal elites and their influence on Italian culture and society.

His political views are closely aligned with those of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Giuli’s appointment is seen as an attempt by Meloni’s government to push forward a more traditionalist cultural agenda, emphasising national heritage and identity.

Ina 2018 interview with Steve Bannon, White House strategist under Donald Trump, Giuli is recorded as saying, “We talked about the patriot Trump. There is another patriot in my opinion who is called Vladimir Putin and is in Moscow.”

Controversies and Scandals

Like many political figures in Italy, Alessandro Giuli has not been without controversy. He has been criticised by left-wing commentators and cultural figures for his outspoken views on immigration, national identity, and multiculturalism. His critics accuse him of promoting a narrow, exclusionary vision of Italian culture that does not reflect the country’s diversity.

In 2022, before his ministerial appointment, Giuli made headlines for controversial remarks regarding gender ideology and the LGBTQ+ community. He criticised what he called the “radical left’s” push to redefine gender and family structures, which drew significant backlash from LGBTQ+ rights organisations and progressive politicians.

Moreover, Giuli has faced accusations of downplaying Italy’s colonial past. He has been criticised for his attempts to reframe certain aspects of Italy’s history in a more positive light, which some historians and cultural critics argue undermines a full reckoning with Italy’s historical wrongdoings.

The Future of Italian Culture Under Giuli

As Culture Minister, Giuli is expected to focus on promoting Italy’s cultural heritage, with a particular emphasis on traditional arts, literature, and historical sites. He has already signalled his intention to increase funding for the restoration and preservation of Italy’s historic landmarks and to foster a stronger sense of national pride through cultural policies.

However, his tenure may also see further conflicts, especially with those who favour a more inclusive and progressive approach to culture. Giuli’s critics worry that his approach might marginalise contemporary and avant-garde forms of expression, particularly those that challenge traditional narratives.

First, Giuli will host the G7 culture summit from 19th-21st September in Campania. He will meet his counterparts from Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the UK and the USA.
