Art historian and journalist Maria Emanuela Bruni has been appointed interim president of Rome’s MAXXI contemporary art museum. This follows the appointment of its former head, Alessandro Giuli, as culture minister last week. The board of the MAXXI Foundation announced the decision on Wednesday night.
Bruni, a member of MAXXI’s board with extensive experience in institutional roles, was the first woman to serve as head of protocol at Palazzo Chigi, the prime minister’s office, in 2008.
MAXXI, Italy’s National Museum of 21st Century Arts, is dedicated to contemporary creativity and innovation in art and architecture. The museum, located in Rome’s Flaminio district, hosts a diverse collection that includes works by renowned artists like Anish Kapoor, William Kentridge, and Gerhard Richter. It also showcases innovative architecture exhibitions and serves as a cultural hub for temporary exhibits, events, and educational programs.
Giuli was sworn in on Friday, replacing Gennaro Sangiuliano, who resigned after being involved in a scandal concerning a would-be advisor with whom he admitted having a relationship.
