Deputy PM Antonio Tajani has warned of a growing “climate of tension” in Italy following an explosion in Rome in which two suspected anarchists were seriously injured while handling a homemade bomb.
The blast occurred on Friday in the Parco degli Acquedotti, on the outskirts of Rome. According to initial reports, the device was being prepared for a potential attack. The targets may have included the defence group Leonardo.
Tajani: “A climate of tension”
Speaking on TG4, Tajani said the incident reflects a broader pattern of unrest linked to anarchist and far-left groups. “There is a climate of tension that anarchists and far-left elements want to continue to create in our country,” he said.
He added that the timing of the incident, on the eve of the national referendum, raised particular concern. “We will see how the investigations progress, but the fact that two anarchists were handling a bomb on the eve of the referendum leaves us very perplexed,” Tajani said. “It worries us greatly.”
The Deputy PM called for vigilance, urging authorities and the public to remain “on high alert” as investigations continue.
Investigation under way
Authorities are working to determine the intended target of the device and whether others were involved. Early indications suggest the explosion was accidental, occurring while the suspects were assembling or handling the explosive.
The case is being examined in the context of domestic extremism, with attention focused on anarchist networks and anti-capitalist groups.
Recent unrest
The incident follows a series of protests in Italian cities involving anarchist and far-left activists. Some demonstrations have turned violent, including clashes with police.
In Turin, recent unrest saw multiple officers injured, including one who suffered fractures after being struck repeatedly with a hammer during a rampage linked to anti-government protests. Italian officials have increasingly raised concerns about radical groups exploiting social and political tensions, particularly during sensitive political moments.
While investigators have yet to confirm the full circumstances of Friday’s explosion, the government has signalled that it is treating the incident seriously.
