Anarchist networks investigation underway

News

Investigators in Rome are examining anarchist networks after two suspected militants died in an explosion while assembling an improvised device in an abandoned farmhouse in the capital.

The blast occurred in a derelict building inside Parco degli Acquedotti, killing Alessandro Mercogliano and Sara Ardizzone. Authorities say they were linked to anarchist circles associated with jailed militant Alfredo Cospito.

Searches and seizures

Overnight searches were carried out by DIGOS officers at the homes of five individuals connected to the same network. Investigators seized various materials and questioned two people, though both are currently considered unrelated to the suspected plan.

Authorities are working to reconstruct the supply chain used to obtain the explosive components and to determine whether others were involved. They are also analysing the device to identify its intended target, believed to have been in the area near the farmhouse.

The Committee for Strategic Anti-Terrorism Analysis (CASA), chaired by Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, met at the Ministry of the Interior with police and intelligence chiefs to assess the situation.

“Climate of tension” says Tajani

Possible targets examined

According to investigators, the improvised bomb was reportedly constructed using fertiliser and a triggering mechanism, making it unstable to transport. This has led authorities to consider the possibility that the intended target was located close to the site of the explosion.

Locations under consideration in the southeast of the capital include a railway junction, the Tuscolano police station and a nearby Carabinieri barracks.

Investigators are also examining whether the suspected plot was linked to campaigns supporting Cospito, whose four-year detention under the strict 41-bis prison regime is due to expire in May. Officials are additionally assessing broader factors, including anti-government tensions, international developments and the proximity of the justice referendum.

Anarchist statement circulated online

Concern has also increased following the publication of a document attributed to several anarchist groups on blogs and messaging platforms. The text described the two dead as having “died in action” and portrayed them as examples of militant anarchism.

Italy’s most recent annual intelligence report identified anarchist networks as one of the most concrete domestic security threats. Furthermore, authorities said their monitoring of related networks has intensified as the investigation continues.
