Mario Eutizia, a carer in Italy, kills four clients

Carer kills four “out of pity”

By Region News Southern Italy

On Friday, 48-year-old Neapolitan Mario Eutizia went to the Carabinieri in Caserta and confessed to four murders. His lawyers Antonio Daniele and Gennaro Romano accompanied him. All the victims had been under his care.

The man was detained and imprisoned by order of the Santa Maria Capua Vetere Public Prosecutor’s Office.

“I did it to gently lead them to death, out of compassion and Christian mercy,” Eutizia explained to public prosecutor Annalisa Imparato. He admitted to administering massive doses of sedative drugs like Talofen and Trittico, up to four times the prescribed amount, to the elderly under his care.

He knew these drugs well, as he used them himself, being an oncology patient like his victims. Eutizia shared he could no longer bear the suffering, both his own and that of those he cared for. “I decided to confess to avoid killing again. I knew I could continue, but I couldn’t bear the suffering,” he told the prosecutor, embracing his role as an “angel of death.”

Two of the murders confessed by Eutizia date back to 2014, involving two unidentified elderly people in Latina. The Carabinieri in Caserta identified the last two victims, both of whom died recently: 89-year-old Luigi Di Marzo in Casoria last December and 96-year-old Gerardo Chintemi in Vibonati in March. The Carabinieri discovered Eutizia had worked as a caregiver for both men. In Vibonati, he had also been reported for stealing the elderly man’s car after his death.

The 48-year-old claimed to have always had the trust of the relatives of those he assisted. He had cared for dozens of elderly people over the years, which allowed him to administer the quadrupled doses unnoticed. Authorities now suspect there may be other victims not yet identified, classified as natural deaths.

Desire to confess to several murders

The story emerged when Eutizia, from Piazza Sant’Anna in Caserta, contacted the Carabinieri, expressing a desire to confess to several murders. The Carabinieri escorted him to the Provincial Command in Via Laviano.

There, the 48-year-old, who has a criminal record for theft, fraud, damage, and embezzlement, but no previous crimes against persons, recounted his actions. He began in 2014, when he was in Latina and had cared for two seriously ill elderly people at different times. Although the Carabinieri conducted quick searches, the identities of the two victims from Lazio remain unconfirmed. However, they were able to confirm the two most recent cases from Casoria and Vibonati.

In all four cases, the deaths had been classified as natural. The bodies may now need to be exhumed for autopsies. Additionally, the jurisdiction might shift from the Santa Maria Capua Vetere Public Prosecutor’s Office, as the crimes occurred elsewhere.

For now, Mario Eutizia remains in prison until the arrest is validated by the judge for preliminary investigations at the Santa Maria Capua Vetere court. The hearing date is yet to be set.
