A union leader has demanded stringent action against the “barbaric exploitation” of workers after an Indian farm labourer died. He was allegedly left on a roadside by his employer following an accident that resulted in a severed arm.

Satnam Singh, 31, sustained injuries on Monday while operating machinery on a farm in Latina, a rural region near Rome that is home to a significant community of Indian migrant workers. Singh, who arrived in Italy with his wife three years ago, was reportedly abandoned with his severed arm outside his residence in Borgo Santa Maria.

Police were alerted by his wife, and an air ambulance transported him to San Camillo Forlanini Hospital in Rome. He succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday. His Italian employer is now under investigation for manslaughter, breaches of workplace safety regulations, and failure to provide assistance.

Left on the roadside

Preliminary investigations indicate Singh was operating a plastic roller wrapping machine attached to a tractor when the accident took place.

“Adding to the horror of the accident is the fact that, instead of being rescued, the Indian farm worker was dumped near his home,” stated Laura Hardeep Kaur, general secretary of the Frosinone-Latina unit of the Flai Cgil union, in an interview with Il Giorno newspaper.

“He was left on the road like a bag of rags, like a sack of rubbish … despite his wife begging [the employer] to take him to hospital. Here we are not only faced with a serious workplace accident, which in itself is already alarming, we are faced with barbaric exploitation. Enough now.”

Latina has a reputation for the exploitation of migrant workers. Hardeep Kaur revealed that Singh was employed at a rate of €5 an hour without a legal work contract. “Foreign labourers continue to be invisible, at the mercy of ferocious bosses, often Italian,” he added.

Flai has called a strike on Saturday 22nd June in the agricultural sector in Latina following Singh’s death. There will be a demonstration at 5pm in the Piazza della Libertá.
