The death toll from Sunday’s collapse of a two-story apartment building in the town of Saviano, near Naples, has risen to four.
Overnight, rescuers recovered the body of an elderly woman from the rubble. The woman’s two grandchildren, a six-year-old boy and a four-year-old girl, along with their mother, also perished in the tragedy.
Initial reports had mistakenly identified the grandmother as the first body found on Sunday, but it later emerged that the deceased was actually the children’s mother.
The children’s father and their two-year-old brother were rescued from the debris alive. The father remains in critical condition in hospital, while the toddler’s injuries are not life-threatening, according to sources.
Authorities suspect a gas cylinder explosion may have triggered the collapse.
