History of Italy News Sport

Paolo Rossi, one of Italy’s greatest footballers, was born on 23rd September 1956. Known for his outstanding performances during the 1982 FIFA World Cup, Rossi became a national hero, leading Italy to victory and earning the Golden Boot as the tournament’s top scorer.

Rossi’s journey to football greatness was not without challenges. He started his professional career at Juventus but faced several injuries that slowed his progress in the early years. It wasn’t until he moved to Vicenza, a smaller club, that he began to make his mark, helping them achieve promotion to Serie A in 1977. His impressive goal-scoring abilities earned him the attention of the national team. Called up for Italy’s 1978 World Cup squad, he performed admirably.

However, Rossi’s career hit a major obstacle in 1980 when he was implicated in a match-fixing scandal, known as the “Totonero” scandal. He was banned from football for two years, which threatened to end his career prematurely. Despite this setback, Rossi maintained his innocence and focused on returning to the sport he loved.

1982 World Cup

In 1982, Rossi’s redemption story unfolded on the world stage. With his ban lifted, he joined the Italian squad for the World Cup in Spain. After a slow start, Rossi exploded into form during the knockout stages. He scored a hat-trick against Brazil in a match still remembered as one of the greatest in World Cup history. He followed this with two goals against Poland in the semi-final and another in the final against West Germany, securing Italy’s third World Cup title.

Rossi’s performances earned him not only the Golden Boot but also the Golden Ball, awarded to the best player of the tournament. His name became synonymous with Italy’s triumph, and he was celebrated as a symbol of resilience and determination. Later that year, he won the Ballon d’Or, cementing his status as one of football’s all-time greats.

After the World Cup, Rossi returned to Juventus, where he won several domestic titles, including two Serie A championships and the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup. He retired from professional football in 1987.

Rossi’s life off the pitch was equally remarkable. He became a well-known football commentator and media personality in Italy. Despite his fame, he remained humble and approachable, admired not only for his achievements but also for his character. Rossi passed away in December 2020 at the age of 64.
