Meloni asks Trump to change format of Peace Board so Italy can join.

Meloni asks Trump to reconfigure ‘Peace Board’

News

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Friday that she has asked US President Donald Trump to change the structure of his proposed “Peace Board”, in order to make it compatible with the Italian Constitution.

Speaking at a joint press conference with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz after an Italy–Germany intergovernmental summit in Rome, Meloni said Italy is interested in joining the initiative but cannot do so under its current framework.

She said the board’s governance model presents “objective constitutional problems” for Italy and potentially for other European countries.

“I asked for his willingness to reopen this configuration to meet the needs not only of Italy, but also of other European countries,” Meloni said. “We have to try to do this work. The presence of countries like ours can make a difference.”

European Concerns Over Governance

Meloni stressed that Rome remains open to participating, provided the board’s structure is adjusted to respect national legal systems and constitutional limits. Chancellor Merz supported her position, saying Germany also has reservations about the current format.

“With respect to the Peace Board, I personally would be willing to enter it if it accompanied the Gaza process into a second phase,” Merz said. “But, in any case, we cannot accept the current governance structures.”

Both leaders said they are ready to explore alternative formats with Washington that would allow greater European involvement.

Ukraine and Nobel Peace Prize

Meloni also expressed strong support for Trump’s diplomatic efforts on Ukraine, saying she hopes his involvement will help bring the conflict to an end. She added that, if Trump succeeds in achieving a just and lasting peace, Italy would back his nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize.

“I hope that we will be able to give the Nobel Peace Prize to Trump,” Meloni said. “I trust that he can make a difference for a just and lasting peace for Ukraine too.”
