Lawyers for Tod’s say the luxury shoemaker will act to protect workers’ rights as Milan prosecutors investigate alleged exploitation in its supply chain.
In a petition to adjourn a hearing, lawyers Francesco Mucciarelli and Luisa Mazzola said the firm aims to ensure “the safety and dignity of labour,” describing these as central to Tod’s identity.
A judge approved the adjournment to review a request from prosecutors to ban Tod’s from advertising for six months. The hearing will now take place on 23 February.
Prosecutors have placed Tod’s and three senior managers under investigation. The case also led prosecutors to request that the fashion house be placed into administration in October.
Investigators accuse the company of knowing about exploitation in Chinese-owned subcontracted workshops. They also say Tod’s ignored audit findings that highlighted problems.
Group boss Diego Della Valle defended the firm after the administration request. He said the probe caused “enormous damage” to the Made in Italy brand.
Milan prosecutors have launched several recent investigations into labour abuses by companies operating in Italy. These include multinationals and major fashion houses such as Loro Piana, Valentino, Dior and Armani.
