Italy is on heightened security alert following US airstrikes on nuclear targets in Iran over the weekend.
Authorities have increased surveillance at sensitive sites, particularly around the Vatican during the ongoing Jubilee and at locations linked to the United States.
Security has also been reinforced at American military bases across the country.
Premier Giorgia Meloni held a conference call with senior ministers on Sunday to assess the Iran situation. The call included Deputy Premiers Antonio Tajani and Matteo Salvini, Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, Defence Minister Guido Crosetto, and Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti.
Meloni also spoke with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz as part of ongoing international coordination.
Opposition leader Elly Schlein, head of the centre-left Democratic Party (PD), urged the government to keep Italy out of the conflict in a phone call with the premier. Meloni also updated President Sergio Mattarella.
The premier is expected to report to parliament on Monday ahead of Tuesday’s NATO summit and Thursday’s European Council meeting.
