La Festa del Papá – 19th March

News

Father’s Day (La Festa del Papá) in Italy falls on 19th March. The date coincides with St. Joseph’s Day, honouring the father of Jesus. St. Joseph represents the ideal father figure in Catholic tradition.

Italians celebrate the occasion with family gatherings, special meals, and traditional desserts. The day is particularly significant in regions with strong Catholic influences. Children often make handmade cards and small gifts for their fathers. Schools and communities may also organise events to mark the day.

One of the most famous traditions is the preparation of zeppole di San Giuseppe. These are fried or baked pastries filled with custard or ricotta and topped with cherries. In some regions, frittelle di riso (sweet rice fritters) are also popular. These treats symbolise prosperity and are enjoyed across the country.

While the celebration is primarily family-oriented, some towns host public events. Parades, religious processions, and church services honour St. Joseph. In Sicily, where St. Joseph is the patron saint, some families prepare elaborate meals for the less fortunate. This tradition, known as Tavola di San Giuseppe, reflects gratitude and generosity.

Father’s Day in Italy is not a public holiday, so businesses remain open. However, many families take the time to celebrate together.

The tradition of celebrating fathers on 19th March dates back centuries. The Catholic Church established the feast of St. Joseph in the Middle Ages. Over time, it evolved into a day to honour fathers as well. Unlike in countries where Father’s Day is celebrated in June, Italy maintains its religious roots.

Although modern influences have brought new gift-giving customs, traditional values remain strong. Many fathers receive small gifts, but the real focus is on quality time with family. Sharing a meal, enjoying traditional desserts, and expressing appreciation are at the heart of the celebration.
