Rail strike: Grass-roots unions confirm Thursday walkout

Workers affiliated with CUB Trasporti and SGB will walkout from Thursday morning after talks at the transport ministry failed to produce results.

Italy’s grass-roots unions confirmed on Tuesday that railway workers affiliated with CUB Trasporti and SGB will strike from 03:00 on Thursday 11 June to 02:00 on Friday 12 June. The action follows the failure of negotiations at the transport ministry to meet the unions’ demands.

The two unions said the walkout is called in support of a platform for a national collective bargaining agreement that adequately protects the rights, safety, health, and wages of all railway workers. They also cited what they described as the “black hole” of contract tendering, the problem of unbundling within the railway system, and what they called the destruction of freight operator Mercitalia through the so-called company/signatory system.

Travellers are advised to check timetables with Trenitalia and other operators before travelling on Thursday.
