Gianluca Vialli, who played 59 times for Italy, has died at the age 58. He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2017 but said in April 2020 he had been given the all-clear. Vialli was re-diagnosed in 2021.

Doctors Without Borders (MSF) rescued a total of 85 migrants from two capsized or struggling boats off Libya on Sunday night and Monday morning. The rescues were at the request of the Italian National Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre under the new NGO code of conduct.

New rescue decree increases risk of deaths say NGOs

On Wednesday (December 28), Italy’s government approved a cabinet decree which imposes tougher rules on charity ships that rescue migrants at sea. The new rescue decree will make it harder for such ships to rescue as many migrants as possible – with severe penalties in cases of non-compliance.
