Young worker dies in silo fall in Rovigo

By Region News North-east Italy

A young worker dies after falling from a height of approximately 10 metres on a farm between San Martino di Venezze and Mardimago in the province of Rovigo. The accident occurred at the facility of the San Martino Corn Producers Cooperative, according to the Veneto branch of the union UIL.

The union’s regional general secretary, Roberto Toigo, said the fall-from-height type of accident “is one of the causes that has claimed the most victims in 2025 in our region and beyond”. He added: “Despite protocols, checks, and warnings, we cannot break this long chain of accidents. A further step is needed; we must understand that haste and profit cannot cost human lives. We must slow down, stop when we perceive danger, and put life first.”

Emergency services including the regional occupational health inspectors (Spisal), the emergency medical service (Suem 118) and the Carabinieri were on site. They launched an investigation to reconstruct the circumstances of the incident.

This is the second fatal workplace accident in the Polesine area in the past week. Previously a 29-year-old worker, Luca Domenicale, was killed after being crushed by machinery last Thursday.

The incident underscores ongoing concerns about workplace safety in agricultural and industrial settings in Italy, especially in sectors where heights and heavy machinery are involved. On Monday, a worker died and three more were injured when a medieval tower in Rome partially collapsed.
