Rome will suspend all tram services from Monday 6 October, replacing them with free shuttle buses until 7 December.
The temporary change comes as part of major works on the Tangenziale Est ring road. The maintenance, carried out by infrastructure company Anas, will block tram power lines and disrupt traffic near Porta Maggiore, San Lorenzo and Via Prenestina.
“The work will prevent trams from leaving the Porta Maggiore and Prenestina depots,” said mobility councillor Eugenio Patanè. “We must disconnect the power lines, making it impossible to operate Rome’s six tram lines.”
Rome’s tram network includes lines 2, 3, 5, 8, 14 and 19.
Patanè added that the city will use this period to advance improvement works originally planned for 2026. “We are taking the opportunity to upgrade four sections of the tramway infrastructure,” he said.
To reduce inconvenience for passengers, public transport company ATAC will provide a free bus service on each tram route. “This will allow us to maintain the same passenger capacity,” Patanè confirmed.
last year, tram services were suspended for a similar period as work was finalised on the Porta Maggiore depot.
Normal tram services are expected to resume on 8 December, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, a national holiday in Italy. The date also coincides with the planned opening of the new Metro C stations at the Colosseum and Porta Metronia.
Commuters can find full details and replacement routes on the city’s official website.
