Italy airport strike Monday 11 May

News Travel & Tourism

Air traffic controllers, easyJet crews, security staff and ground handlers are all set to strike on 11 May. The airport strike prompts ITA Airways to cancel around 38% of its scheduled flights.

Passengers travelling through Italian airports on Monday 11 May face significant disruption following overlapping strike action across several sectors of the aviation industry.

Air traffic controllers employed by national operator ENAV will stage an eight-hour strike from 10.00 to 18.00, affecting operations in Rome and Naples. Given Rome’s role as a central node in Italy’s airspace, the walkout is expected to have knock-on effects on flights across the country.

Italy-based pilots and cabin crew employed by easyJet will strike for the same eight hours, also from 10.00 to 18.00. Security staff at Rome’s Fiumicino and Ciampino airports, and ground staff at Palermo airport, have declared a four-hour strike from midday to 16.00. Ground staff at Milan Malpensa and Cagliari will walk out from 13.00 to 17.00. Check-in, boarding, and baggage handling services at affected airports may all be impacted.

ITA Airways has announced it has been forced to cancel approximately 38 per cent of its flights scheduled for the day as a result of the combined action.

Under Italian law, flights scheduled between 07.00–10.00 and 18.00–21.00 are guaranteed during strike periods. Italy’s civil aviation authority ENAC has published further information on its website, and the full strike calendar is available via the transport ministry.

Passengers with flights on Monday are strongly advised to check their booking directly with their airline before travelling and to allow extra time at the airport.
