The first-ever G7 Tourism Ministers’ meeting, being held from 13th November to 15th November 2024, in Florence, is making history by dedicating an entire session to this vital sector.

Chaired by Italy’s Minister of Tourism, Daniela Santanchè, the gathering marks a significant milestone in recognising the economic, social, and cultural importance of tourism on a global scale.

Ministers and Heads of Delegations from Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the European Union have come together in Florence to focus on shaping the future of the tourism industry. The event aims to create a shared vision for making the sector more sustainable from economic, social, and environmental perspectives, while navigating the rapidly evolving technological landscape.

The meeting will cover a broad agenda, divided into multiple sessions, addressing key issues such as tourism’s role in socio-economic development, the importance of human capital (including work, inclusion, and skills development), and the integration of digitalisation and artificial intelligence (AI) into the tourism sector. Participating international organisations, including the OECD and UN Tourism, alongside invited countries and private sector representatives, will share insights on these topics.

Italian G7 presidency looking for new opportunities for growth

The Italian presidency has set out specific priorities for the meeting, including the exploration of good practices within the tourism sector and new opportunities for growth. Ministers will discuss how tourism can serve as an engine for both economic growth and social development, with a focus on ensuring that the human element remains central to the tourism experience. The role of AI in shaping the future of tourism and the adoption of digital tools will also be examined, ensuring that innovation is aligned with sustainable and inclusive growth.

The G7 summit was preceded by a special event on November 13, 2024, at 14:00 at Palazzo Spini Feroni. This side event brought together international players and private sector leaders to explore the current and future challenges facing the tourism industry, particularly in light of AI advancements. The discussion highlighted the impact of technology and investments by major Italian brands in sectors such as fashion, music, cruises, food, and design, all of which play a crucial role in shaping Italy’s tourism strategies.

While the G7 discussions are focused on shaping a sustainable future for tourism, the issue of overtourism is also evident in the city. Outside the convention, protestors from the ‘Save Florence’ movement voiced concerns about the pressures of mass tourism in the city, calling for more measures to preserve its cultural heritage and address the challenges posed by overcrowding.
