Tourist bus crashes into river Po

News Travel & Tourism

A tourist bus plunged into the Po river after veering off the Ponte Vittorio Emanuele I in central Turin. The driver, a 55-year-old man, died at the scene. Authorities confirmed no passengers were on board.

The tourist bus crashed into the Po shortly after 6pm. Witnesses saw the bus break through the bridge’s barriers and fall several metres into the river below. Firefighters, river rescue teams, and police arrived within minutes.

Despite their efforts, the driver could not be saved. Early reports indicate he was alone in the vehicle and may have lost control while driving across the bridge. Investigators have ordered an autopsy to determine if a medical emergency played a role.

Police and transport officials are examining possible causes, including mechanical failure, fatigue, or a sudden health issue. Surveillance footage and the bus’s black box may offer further details. Officials confirmed the vehicle had passed safety checks and was not carrying tourists due to scheduled maintenance.

City’s Response

Turin Mayor Stefano Lo Russo expressed condolences to the driver’s family and praised emergency responders. “This is a terrible tragedy. We stand with the victim’s loved ones and will ensure a thorough investigation,” he said.

The Ponte Vittorio Emanuele I, connecting Piazza Vittorio Veneto to Borgo Po, is a key route in Turin. Traffic was diverted, and the area sealed off as crews work to remove the bus and inspect the bridge for damage.

City officials plan to review safety protocols for tourist transport in Turin. Transport unions have called for a minute of silence to honour the driver. They are also pushing for regular medical and psychological screenings for public transport operators.
