Jannik Sinner displayed remarkable form on Wednesday night, storming into the Aus Open semi-finals with a dominant performance.
The World No. 1 cruised past home favourite Alex de Minaur 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 in the quarter-finals, keeping his bid for consecutive hard-court Grand Slam titles alive. The match, held in Rod Laver Arena, lasted just one hour and 48 minutes and highlighted Sinner’s clinical baseline play.
“I feel like today I was feeling everything,” Sinner said during his on-court interview. “On days like this, when you break quite early in each set, it’s a little bit easier. He’s a tough competitor and an amazing player… We’ve played each other so many times and we try to understand each other’s games to prepare ourselves in the best possible way.”
Sinner dominated De Minaur
Sinner’s victory extended his Lexus ATP Head2Head dominance over De Minaur to 10 wins in 11 meetings. The Italian fired powerful groundstrokes from the baseline, leaving De Minaur often scrambling to respond. Sinner’s relentless hitting earned him six breaks of serve from 10 opportunities while dropping just 10 points on his own delivery.
This emphatic performance came after a challenging fourth-round match against Holger Rune, during which Sinner appeared unwell. Reflecting on his recovery, he said, “Yesterday was a very easy day. I played just half an hour or 40 minutes with my coaches. They gave me a good rhythm. Talking about general physicality, especially when you are young, you recover very fast. I really like to sleep, so I just tried to rest in the best possible way.”
Sinner’s victory not only underlined his current dominance but also extended his winning streak at hard-court Grand Slam events to 19 matches. This run includes his 2024 US Open triumph and last year’s Australian Open title.
Next, the 23-year-old faces Ben Shelton in the Aus Open semi-finals. Shelton secured his spot by defeating Lorenzo Sonego in a tightly contested four-set match. The clash between Sinner and Shelton will mark their sixth meeting, promising another thrilling encounter at Melbourne Park as Sinner eyes his third Grand Slam title.
