Italy into quarter-finals of the Davis Cup

TENNIS – Jannik Sinner steered Italy into the quarter-finals of the Davis Cup with a 7-5, 6-0 win over Colombia’s Daniel Elahi Galan Riveros.  

In front of home supporters in Turin, Jannik Sinner moved past Daniel Elahi Galan Riveros 7-5, 6-0 on Saturday. This secured round-robin qualification for Italy at the Davis Cup Finals.

A tight start to the match made way for an easier finish. The Italian came through, winning the last nine games to take the match.

“It is an unbelievable feeling playing here,” Sinner said after his 80-minute win. “It is a great feeling to be qualified. I think Lorenzo [Sonego] and I played great matches against tough opponents. It means a lot to us. I think we are a great group of incredible players. It is a pleasure playing here in this arena.”

Sinner and Fabio Fognini lost a hard-fought doubles match, 6-2, 5-7, 7-6(6). However, the two singles wins were enough to see the Group E host team through to the next stage of the tournament.

Sonego triumphs in Davis Cup too

Earlier, Lorenzo Sonego overcame Nicolas Mejia 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-2 to record his second win of the week. The World No. 27 hit seven aces and saved four of the five break points he faced to triumph after two hours and 37 minutes. This in his home town – he lioves only 200 metres from the Arena.
