World number one Jannik Sinner made history on Sunday, becoming the first Italian to win the ATP Finals, defeating American Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-4 in Turin.

The victory capped a stellar season for Sinner, who also claimed titles at the Australian Open and US Open. “It’s a special moment,” said the 23-year-old. “Winning in front of this crowd means so much to me.”

Sinner’s victory marked his eighth title of the year, achieved without dropping a set. “It’s amazing, my first title in Italy,” he added. “I tried to understand what works best against each opponent, playing my best possible tennis. That was the key.” Sinner’s serve proved decisive, with 83% of points won on his first delivery, according to Infosys ATP Stats.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni celebrated Sinner’s triumph, calling it “a victory that rewards talent, dedication, and passion.” Sinner’s remarkable year also saw him join Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic as the only players to win the Australian Open, US Open, and Nitto ATP Finals in one season. Additionally, he became the first player born in the 2000s to capture the Finals trophy.

In a rematch of the US Open final and a group-stage match, Sinner overwhelmed Fritz with relentless baseline play and sharp tactical adjustments, taking 85 minutes to secure the win. “I tried to find a better key than last year,” said Sinner, reflecting on his loss to Novak Djokovic in the 2023 final. “Today there was more tension, but I am happy to share this with the Italian public.”

ATP Finals to stay in Italy until 2030

The ATP Finals, hosted in Turin since 2021, will remain in Italy until at least 2030, ATP President Andrea Gaudenzi confirmed. “Italy has been an incredible host, creating a truly special experience for players and fans,” he said. The Italian Tennis Federation President Angelo Binaghi added, “The connection between the event and Italian fans is now stronger than ever with Sinner as World No.1.”
