News Sport

Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini are Italian Open women’s doubles champions. Errani was one half of the pairing which last won the tournament for Italy in 2012.

After 12 years, two Italians have once again triumphed at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia. Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini emerged victorious over no.3 seeds American Coco Gauff and the New Zealander Erin Routliffe in a super tie-break.

For Sara, this marks her second triumph at the Foro Italico, following her 2012 win with Roberta Vinci. This victory is a testament to the power of dreams, grit, and determination. Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini are the new doubles champions of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia, winning 6-3, 4-6, 10-8 in an hour and 28 minutes, under the emotional gaze of BJK Cup captain Tathiana Garbin.

How the first two sets unfolded

Errani and Paolini started strong, taking an early lead in the first. They defended three break points to confirm their advantage (2-0). Routliffe then held her serve easily (2-1), but the Italians’ seamless teamwork kept them in control. They secured another break on Routliffe’s serve (5-2) but Errani surrendered her serve in the following game (5-3). However, they clinched the first set 6-3 by breaking Gauff once more.

In the second set, Errani lost her serve again (2-1), but the Italians immediately broke back (2-2). Paolini’s ace regained their lead (3-2). Despite Gauff’s struggles on serve, she managed to break Errani (4-3) and, with Routliffe, held their advantage to 5-3. The Italians saved two set points to narrow the gap (5-4) but eventually lost the set 6-4 after Paolini’s shot went long.

Decisive Super Tie-Break

The super tie-break saw Gauff and Routliffe initially take the lead (4-1), but Errani and Paolini fought back to 4-3. The score went back and forth, with Gauff and Routliffe leading 7-5 and then 8-6. However, a double fault by Gauff levelled the score at 8-8. Routliffe’s wide forehand gave Italy match point. Another Gauff double fault sealed the Italian Open women’s doubles victory for Errani and Paolini, finishing the tie-break 10-8 with four consecutive points.
