Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori have etched their names in tennis history by becoming the first Italian pair to clinch a Grand Slam title in mixed doubles at the 2024 US Open in Flushing Meadows.

The Italian duo triumphed in the 2024 US Open mixed doubles final over Americans Taylor Townsend and Donald Young, securing a 7-6, 7-5 victory in just 88 minutes. Errani and Vavassori displayed remarkable composure and precision on the courts of Flushing Meadows, particularly during crucial points in this closely contested US Open mixed doubles match.

Errani’s Impressive Career Milestone in Grand Slam Doubles

For Sara Errani, this 2024 US Open mixed doubles victory adds another jewel to her already illustrious career. It marks her sixth Grand Slam title in doubles, completing a remarkable Career Golden Slam. Her success in the US Open mixed doubles further cements her status as one of Italy’s greatest tennis players.

Meanwhile, Andrea Vavassori, hailing from Turin, celebrated his first major title with this 2024 US Open mixed doubles win. His performance at the net was particularly noteworthy, with lightning-fast reflexes that compensated for a less dominant serve in the first set of the US Open mixed doubles final.

Historic 2024 US Open Mixed Doubles Victory

The Italians dominated the first set tie-break 7-0, setting the tone for the match. Despite a strong comeback from the American pair in the second set, Errani’s clutch serving and Vavassori’s razor-sharp returns sealed the victory on their third match point, securing the US Open mixed doubles title.

The win triggered an emotional response from both players. Vavassori, overwhelmed by his first Grand Slam victory, shed tears of joy, while Errani beamed with happiness at adding another major title to her collection.

Post-Match Reactions from the Champions

Errani expressed her disbelief at her recent successes, stating, “Life has exaggerated this year, I can’t believe it either. I won Rome and the Olympic gold [with Jasmine Paolini], I won here [with Andrea Vavassori] in the US Open mixed doubles, I’m so happy”.

Vavassori shared his excitement about the mixed doubles victory: “I always said I wanted to win a Slam, whether it was in singles, doubles, or mixed doubles, it didn’t matter. I’m very excited because I did it and I did it with Sara who was great in this tournament.”

The Turin native also revealed plans for future collaborations, announcing, “Sara is an example, she’s fundamental for the whole movement: you’ll see us in Australia too.” This suggests the pair might compete in future Grand Slam mixed doubles events, including the 2025 Australian Open.

Errani credited their success to Vavassori’s character and their strong partnership. “He’s a crazy guy, he’s humble, available, funny, easy-going. He makes me feel good, he makes me win volley after volley: he’s perfect,” she said, highlighting the chemistry that led to their triumph.

Sinner faces Brit in Men’s Singles semi-final

Jannik Sinner, the number one seed in the men’s singles, will face Briton Jack Draper in the semi-final. Draper is ranked 25 in the tournaments.

Sinner is the older player by four months and already has a Grand Slam under his belt; this is Draper’s first Grand Slam semi-final. They have played once before, in 2021 at Queen’s Club – the pre-Wimbledon tournament. Draper took that match on two tie-breakers, but much has changed since that meeting. Draper has spent 9 hours and 14 minutes of court time across five matches, the least of any of the semi-finalists by far. He has impressively won 81% of his first-serve points and converted 29 of 57 break-point opportunities, while surrendering his serve only three times. However, the tennis experts at the US Open still favour Sinner to edge this contest.
