Salvini: the government will last the full term

News

Deputy Premier and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini has said that the differences between the parties of Premier Giorgia Meloni’s ruling coalition at the EU level will not cause the government to cave in before the end of the parliamentary term.

Salvini’s League has aligned with the newly formed Patriots for Europe group in the European Parliament, initiated by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. This group also includes Marine Le Pen’s National Rally (RN) and has attracted Spain’s ultraconservative Vox and Austria’s far-right Freedom Party (FPO) away from the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) caucus, which Meloni’s Brothers of Italy (FdI) is part of.

Another key party in the ruling coalition, Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani’s Forza Italia, is affiliated with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s centre-right European People’s Party (EPP).

“This is the government chosen by Italians, and it will last the full five years of the parliamentary term,” Salvini told ‘ItaliaReportUsa’ when asked about potential instability due to differing European alignments within the coalition.

“We had different positions in Europe before, and we still do. There is a faction in the government that supports von der Leyen’s second term. However, we cannot endorse the outgoing Commission due to the serious damage it has caused.

“Regarding our government, ‘Hic manebimus optime’ (I am very happy here), and we will continue to govern for five years.”
